Contribute to the October Broadcast, focusing on

Personal Stewardship

Priorities, gifts, time, money. How are we equipping young adults in our communities to be intentional and responsible caregivers of what they have been given? The ability to care for the earth, for their communities and for the society they are inheriting is dependent upon their ability to care for that which is closest to them. How is your ministry exemplifying responsible stewardship and providing tools for the personal stewardship of its members?

September 2009

What does it mean to be a leader? We are all, of course, leaders in one sense or another. Some are leaders on account of their age, others on account of their occupation, others on account of their personality. We might all consider ourselves leaders on account of our baptism. But just as the context of our leadership varies, so do the skills and attributes necessary for effective leadership.

In this issue of Broadcast, four leaders consider what Leadership Development means in their particular contexts. They look both at their own leadership as young adult and campus ministers and at the leadership qualities and skills they encourage and nurture in those they serve. They examine the ways that leadership in a religious community differs from the other types of leadership encouraged within our society more broadly.

As you engage with these pieces, we encourage you to consider your own ministry. What qualities and skills make for an effective leader in the community you serve? What kinds of leadership are necessary to move the church forward in being Christ to the world? What are your own gifts and struggles with leadership? How can we, as a community, support one another in becoming more effective leaders and examples for the young adults we serve?

Many blessings,

Douglas, Jason & Miguelina

Holy Companionship
The Rev’d Craig Loya, Episcopal Diocese of Kansas

Everyone who follows the way of Christ does so because of someone else:  a close friend, a parent, a grandparent, a sibling, a teacher, a pastor.  At some point, every one of us was invited into Christian community by someone, and all of us have worked out most of what we know about the love, grace, and forgiveness of God in our relationships with others.  Indeed, the most important parts of ourselves and our vocations are often the result of a few key mentors .... >>>

Unless Spoken To

When Spoken To: Religious Leadership on a Military Campus
Douglas Hexel, Canterbury Club of West Point.

At an institution world-renowned for creating multifaceted leaders, little emphasis is placed on creating religious leaders.  The United States Military Academy at West Point has been situated atop granite bluffs on the Hudson River since 1802.  The Academy has been contributing military and world leaders just as long.... >>>

Raising Up Disciples

Raising Up Disciples: The Episcopal Service Corps
The Rev'd Jered Weber-Johnson, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and Episcopal Chaplain to American University

Stanley Hauerwas once wrote, “Discipleship is quite simply extended training in being dispossessed.”  That is to say, a disciple gives her whole life over to the radical, self-emptying way of Jesus.  The call to discipleship means moving beyond simple religious affiliation into intentional, disciplined, and ongoing lived commitment to God’s mission of reconciliation in the world... >>>
