What is discernment? (Why Serve 2010) from Jason Sierra on Vimeo.

A Vocational Conference for Young Adults of Color
June 3-6, 2010
The School of Theology at the University of the South
Sewanee, TN

Why Serve is a conference about discerning God’s call in our lives. What am I called to do? How am I called to live? Where? With whom? These are all questions for discernment. Join us for a time of reflection, conversation, challenge and resource sharing as we collectively discern God’s call for us.

Why young adults of color?
Our baptismal covenant calls all people to ministry, however our structures for raising up leadership and empowering our members do not reflect the broad cultural diversity of our church. In an effort to explore this diversity our ethnic missioners have chosen to work together to provide alternative models for discernment that celebrate and explore those experiences at the margins of the dominant culture, further opening the doors of our church and demonstrating a road for our continued growth and transformation.

Why 18-30?
This period of the lifespan represents a time of incredible transition, transformation and growth. It is a time when we make decisions about what kind of life represents the good life and how we go about building that life for ourselves. The borders are, of course, fuzzy, but we believe these years represent the heart of the move toward independence and ownership of one’s life and choices.

Do I have to be considering ordination?
No. While we welcome those who do feel called to ordained ministry, this conference is built to address the call to ministry of all people, both inside and outside the church, both lay and ordained. We all have questions in our lives we are trying to answer faithfully. What are yours? For those who are considering ordination, there will be available resources, people and time to help you wrestle with this call.

It only costs $50?!
Largely subsidized by the generosity of the School of Theology, the cost of participation is only $50 per participant. This covers housing, meals, conference costs and local ground transportation. Participants are responsible for either raising or covering the cost of their flights to Tennessee.
